Jesse Spencer House

People: Eero Saarinen

Date: 1938

City: Huntington Woods

The Spencer House was Eero Saarinen's first independent commission. Built in 1938, this house is an early example of the move away from earlier European styles in residential building in favor of newer ideas about art and architecture.

The house has no ornament and has been reduced to a more elemental form. It is a simple brick box with horizontal bands of windows and a low-pitched gable roof.  The house has been altered from Saarinen's original design.
