Frank and Dorothy Ward House

People: Yuzuru “LeRoy” Kawahara

Date: 1952

City: Battle Creek

The Frank and Dorothy Ward House is architecturally significant as an excellent example of a mid-century modern Wrightian residence by Taliesin Fellow Yuzuru “LeRoy” Kawahara. It is one of few known residences planned solely by Taliesin Fellow Yuzuru “LeRoy” Kawahara, who later planned numerous commercial buildings in central California. The residence is almost completely intact and original to its 1952 construction. The structure is also significant for its elaborate fallout shelter and disaster-proof basement planned by the house’s first owner, Frank Ward, who later served as civil defense directors of both the City of Battle Creek and the State of Michigan.
